During my time helping people lose weight and get into better shape, many people have ask me about the optimal number of times to take and record their body weight. Because this is a great question, I decided to share the answer with The Weight Loss Foundation visitors so that everyone may become more informed weight loss dieters. I am mostly asked the question, "How often do I have to weigh myself?" Sometimes I am even asked the question, "How often is too often to take my weight?" How the question is ask has to do with the individual’s outlook on weight loss. Prior disappointments and low expectations sometimes make people hesitant to weight often because they do not want to be discouraged by having to look at the scale often. High hopes and optimism often make people gun hoe about looking at their weight constantly. The optimum number of times to weigh in has to do with accounting for weekly fluctuations in weight while making sure you are moving in the right direction. You don’t want to go too far in the wrong direction before you figure it out! Body weight is a tricky thing because your weight naturally fluctuates based on the time of day, time of the month, water weight, intestinal holdup, lean tissue weight, and fat tissue weight. When you lose weight you want to weigh often enough so that you know how to predict these other small changes and so that you are able to recognize true fat weight decreases. Weigh Yourself Every Other Day. You should weight yourself every other day so that the daily changes in weight do not drive you mad and so that you are able to clearly see your progress on paper. (Always record and date your weights while you are dieting for weight loss.) If you do not like seeing the scale, this may be hard at first but you need to face the truth squarely so that you can overcome this weight loss challenge. In time and with small successes, you will learn to love your scale and you will love yourself a little more than you ever have before.
