The Barbell squat is such an excellent resistance training exercise for weight loss because it involves all the muscles of the legs. These are the largest muscles in the body and working them is a sure way to boost your metabolism. Shaping and defining these muscles will also improve anyone’s physique. For the barbell squat it is best to stand facing a mirror. Un-rack the weight by standing beneath the bar with back comfortably straight and the bar touching the top of the traps (not on the bony part of the vertebrae). Hands are underneath the bar to stabilize it. After standing erect to un-rack the bar take 1 to 2 small steps back to clear the rack but to stay with-in the safety of the squat unit. Feet should be about shoulder width apart (a little wider if this makes you comfortable). Slowly lower yourself causing flexion in the knee joint until a comfortable depth is reached. Stand back erect. Your back should remain straight and you should never hold your head directly to the floor.
